Kang Myung-Ock

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the effects of counseling challenges coping training using role play on counseling challenges self-efficacy and social distance toward the mentally-ill among nursing students.

Method: Quasi-nonequivalent experimental design was adopted. The subjects were 56 nursing students(experiment: 28case, control: 28case) from Chodang university in Chonnam Province. Both groups had lecture of Mental Health Nursing during a semester before clinical practice. And then, counseling challenges coping training using role play was given to experiment group, control group had routine practice experience. Both groups were placed same facilities and same numbers with different time. Data was collected before and after the experiment by using self-rating questionnaire consisted of 39 items. The data analysis was done using x2-test, paired-t rest, t-test, and ANCOVA.

Results: After experiment, after ANCOVA, between the experiment group and control group, the difference of counseling challenges self-efficacy(t=-.569, p=.0572, F=.027, p= .315) and that of social distance(t=.723, p=.473, F=.000, p=.993) were not significant. But experiment group showed significant differences in counseling challenges self-efficacy (paired-t=-3.826, p=.001) and social distance(paired-t=-2.854, p=.008) with contrast to control group in counseling challenges self-efficacy(paired-t=-1.789, p=.085) and social distance(paired-t=-1.877, p=.071)

Conclusion: counseling challenges coping training using role play was considered to be effective but not enough to improve counseling challenges self-efficacy and social distance toward the mentally-ill than other method. Further studies, using more defined counseling challenges coping training or adding other educational strategies will be needed.
